Government trains Muyira farmers on mindset change

Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, Commissioner HRM Ms. Babirye Proscovia concluded the training for Muyira farmers, focusing on increasing household income in piggery production through mindset change, sponsored by the Government of Uganda.

In the opening speech, the Principal highlighted the profitability of piggery as a business and emphasized the teachings from NFLC Project II. The training aimed to impart pig farming concepts, with a focus on minimizing inputs to enhance income and family welfare.

The Principal highlighted that the Ugandan government sponsors this training, relaying a message from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries. The message expressed a desire for positive changes among Muyira parish farmers, envisaging them as exemplary figures for the nation.

Comprehensive support for all Muyira farmers was assured, with an emphasis on maintaining detailed farm records for business benefits. The Principal encouraged self-reflection on business outcomes, underlining the importance of seeking solutions through the provided training.

Advice was given to secure markets, be vigilant about diseases like swine fever, and control access to piggery businesses. Three key aspects were underscored: improving home infrastructure, including roads and feeder roads, and ensuring sanitation through latrine construction.

The Principal stressed the significance of a positive mindset and financial prudence, urging farmers to save and accumulate capital.

In closing, he noted that 50 participants, identified through NFLC Project II, mostly engaged in Piggery production to increase income, received the training. Gratitude was expressed to the HRM and the Permanent Secretary for supporting NFLC in starting the government-sponsored training.

Participants visited the Nakilebe farm, learning essential skills, with plans to visit Muyira farmers next. NFLC is preparing to train juveniles at Kampiringisa Rehabilitation Center and more farmers, using the farmer field schools approach for participants to train others.

Participants requested Piggery semen at the Centre, and the Principal pledged assistance if the equipment is provided. Technical support and aid in acquiring PDM funds for Muyira farmers were also promised as the Centre collaborates closely with Mpigi district
